He called Sinclair.
“Yeah.” He’d woken his brother.
“Internado tried to kill Carly.”
“Fuck, no. Where is she?”
“Washington Hospital ER.”
“Is she okay?”
“She will be.”
“On my way.”
Maverick returned to her bedside and watched her sleep. Thirty minutes later, Warren arrived. So as not to wake her, they spoke in whispers outside her room.
When Maverick finished giving his dad the short version, Warren couldn’t speak for several seconds. “I’m so thankful you got to her in time and that you know CPR.”
“I’ve kind of been a wreck and you know I’m a rock.”
“Son.” His dad gripped his shoulder. “You adore her. She’s the one.”
He nodded in agreement. “She is.”
“I’ll represent you both.”
“We don’t need lawyers.”
“Like hell you don’t. You shot a United States senator. Let me tell you one thing…George Internado is going to get a heaping dose of justice when I’m finished with him.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Can Carly have visitors?”
“I’m sure she’d love to see you, but she’s been sleeping pretty much this entire time.”
“Have you gone to the bathroom? Gotten something to eat?”
He shook his head. “I don’t want to leave her.”
“Did you call Sinclair?”
“He’s on his way.”
“Desiree and Hudson?”
“I’ll call them in a few.”
“Why don’t you intercept Sinclair and take ten? You’re wound pretty tightly. I’ll stay with Carly.”
Maverick hesitated.
Warren nodded. “Clear your head, Ashton. She’ll be okay. I’ll call you if anything changes.”
“I won’t be long.” He rubbed the back of his neck, hoping for some relief.
Carly was still asleep, so he kissed her forehead, watched her breathe, then left. He found Sinclair in the ER lobby. The woman manning the check-in desk was smiling way too big for someone who worked in an emergency room.
