For tonight, she would stay with him.

“I’ll get your phone.” He left the bed, returning with her crossbody bag.

“Thank you,” she said, silently acknowledging his thoughtfulness.

She typed a text to Addison. “Oops, I did it again.”

After sending it, she showed Rebel. His laugh brought her unexpected joy. Simple and pure. And she loved it.

He lay on his back, pulled her close. She rested her head on his chest and ran her fingers through his light dusting of chest hair while he stroked her back with a soothing touch.

“We’ve got a situation,” he said.

Pushing off him, she scanned his face. “What kind of situation?”

“We have to disclose our relationship to HR,” he said.

“Tell them we’re having sex? Are you insane? They’ll separate us. I could get fired. Or I’d be forced to work with Karen.”

He chuckled. “We’ll keep this between us.”

“There is nothis. And there’s definitely nous,” she protested. “I just needed to get you out of my system. Now, I can focus on the case.”

“You believe the crap you’re sayin’?”

No.

“Absolutely,” she replied.

“Yeah, me too.” His sarcasm wasn’t wasted on her.

“So, I had a thing happen,” she said.

He raised his eyebrows, waiting.

“I got home last night to find my sister having some naked fun with her husband in the living room.”

Rebel laughed.

“I need to move out.”

“Why?” he asked.

“Didyouever walk in on your sister? I mean, I’m happy she’s having sex with her husband, but I never want to see that again.”

“You don’t have time to look for a new place now,” he said.

“I know.”

A moment of silence passed.

“Computer,” he said. “Bedroom lights out.”

The room darkened.

In his arms, she felt safe.

“I like having you here with me,” he murmured before kissing the top of her head.
